A quick welcome, redux!

Hi and hi again -- thanks to Don Barrett many of you are finding this blog for the first time. Welcome!

Normally I update the blog once a week, however if there's breaking news and / or my day job gets in the way, the schedule might become a bit more erratic.

My goal is not to emulate LARadio.com -- no one can do what Don Barrett did so well and for so long, but I simply needed an outlet to keep writing about my favorite media.

Yours truly, Dick Whittington, Don Barrett earlier this year

Thanks to Don Barrett, I've met a number of individuals who are my heroes -- talent that graced the local airwaves. That may be one of you that I had the privilege of meeting and perhaps interviewing!

I probably will write more based on my memories about my time listening to the L.A. radio dial, but to reiterate, if there's breaking news I'll try to offer my two yen. And of course, there's my annual year in review, my once-a-year attempt to try to make sense of the twelve previous months. Hint: This year's review will be a doozy!

Hoping all of you are safe and sane! I welcome feedback, just not in my headphones.

  2. As a dedicated LARL for whom LA radio has been the soundtrack for more than half a century, I am so grateful to see your blog and will read it as often as you post (the posts already up are very good). I wish you lots of success with this blog and with all facets of your life. You like Don have become friends beyond just being correspondents. Take care, Tim James

    1. Thank you! My goal is about once a week, I have a pesky day job that keeps me from my real occupation, but I'll do the best I can. Please stay safe and sane!

    1. Thanks for the kind words, but no one can do what Don Barrett did for such a long time and such high quality. I'm addicted to radio and enjoy writing about it, so this is mostly for fun. I'll do my best!

  5. I'm so happy that the baton has been passed, so to speak. Don did a fantabulous job of keeping us in the know on all things LA radio. Don't forget to include a meme or cartoon! ;)

    1. I can't replace Don Barrett but I do plan on having some fun with this. I may include an occasional meme or cartoon. Perhaps not as interesting as some of his choices (I can already hear him accusing me of being chicken feed, or something else chickens are famous for).

  6. I was lamenting the ending of Don Barrett's blog as I read Brian Whitman's Facebook post this morning where Salem issued an announcement of Brian's departure as (co-)host of 870-AM, The Answer's morning show. Another radio style Friday termination that too many in radio have received. I thought some light could be shed on it by laradio's site if still active- then clicked over and saw his information link to this site. Good surprise and more will look to you for as one might say, "An oasis in the desert of radio industry's operations and the people it's touched." I enjoyed your past work at Don's blog over the many years and look forward to seeing more of your efforts.

  7. Alan, thanks for your blog. You're communicating to an audience who've seen the evolution of the radio biz from analog to digital. What a wealth of wisdom!!
