We hope you had a Merry Christmas and had a good start to Hanukah! This is our dog Pepper with her present, it's already had one ear chewed off.
They're listening: Heritage rocker KLOS is conducting a
listener survey to find out what their audience is listening to and what they want to hear. Worth noting is the station is station is comparing itself to other rock stations includiing JACK-FM (KCBS-FM), ALT 98.7 (KYSR) and KROQ, also well-established stations.
There's speculation Meruelo Media is now refocusing on their radio properties, having sold KWHY-TV to the Church of Scientology. Still, Meruelo owns KBEH-TV, along with their other broadcast properties - bilingual Reggaton CALI 93.9 (KLLI), hip hop Power 106 (KPWR), and classic hip hop KDAY. Others speculate Meruelo is trying to exit broadcast altogether.
One more note: The call letters for Channel 22 will be changed to KSCN, abandoning the KWHY call letters the station had held for nearly 60 years.
Another final sign-off: We're sorry to report sports radio host
J Woodfin died suddenly of a heart attack last week. He was heard across the dial on AM 570 (KLAC) and 710/ESPN (KSPN), as well as appearing on TV on KNBC-TV's "Going Roggin," hosted by
Fred Roggin. In addition to his sportscasting, Fredrick J. Woodfin was a real estate redeveloper, insurance broker, and
helped his clients with credit disputes. We've reached out to some of his past colleagues for their remembrances, all have offered brief comments about "what a good guy" he was. Woodfin was 42 years of age.
Grounded: With the demise of "KFI in the Sky," it appears now there are no airborne traffic reports by any station in the U.S. Suffice to say there's very mixed reaction. Some argue with the preponderance of closed-circuit cameras monitoring the local freeways, there's no need for an aerial view. Others argue the popularity and flexiblity of drones demonstrates the value of being able to get a birds-eye view. We'll share more opinions either in the year-end column or other future postings.
Ho Ho Ho?: One should remain skeptical of the 6+ radio ratings since it doesn't offer the demographic breakdowns needed by subscribing stations and their clients. Nonetheless, it's been noted while KOST - the originator of all-Christmas music during the holidays since 2001 --
still reported a significant ratings boost but not nearly as dramatic as in past years, including a drop in cume of over 10 percent. It's argued the station got a later start due to the timing of the Thanksgiving holidays, though it appears to be the second year in a row holiday ratings have declined, this year without competition from KKGO or any other station.
Speaking of the year-end column (OK, an awkward segue), we're now working on a review of the past 12 months on the local dial. It'll be a doozy. We welcome any suggestions for items for us to add. And of course, you can get notices whenever we update the blog, send your email address to ayodaradio@gmail.com, it'll be held in confidence and won't every be sold. To reiterate, this is a non-profit venture, whether we like it or not.
Please enjoy (safely) the rest of your holiday season!

Channel 22’s new calls will actually be KSCN.
