Breaking news - We've lost Mike Lundy and T. Michael Jordan

Although it may have been reported elsewhere, I did want to acknowledge the L.A. radio community has lost two of its own over the past few days.

Loren Lundy was better known to his listeners as Mike Lundy. He made his name known as a news anchor, including nine years at KGIL / KMGX and seven years at all-news KFWB until his retirement in 2007. He also had his own media group producing radio programs and English lesson CDs for the Japanese market.

From his bio at LARadio.com: 

“The success of KFWB was not only the news itself, but its presentation,” Lundy wrote in an essay for LARadio.com. “Whenever one hears, ‘Give us 22 minutes and we’ll give you the world,’ there is instant identification to KFWB.”

He entered hospice care over a week ago and passed four days later. He was a solid journalist and newswriter. Our best to his family and friends.

Tom Nefeldt has been a friend for over four decades. Most L.A. listeners remember him as T. Michael Jordan. He spent a couple of years at San Bernardino's KMEN before landing at Rick Carroll's KKDJ in 1973 for a couple of years, then re-emerged at KEZY when Carroll took over "the Mighty 1190" in 1976.

I talked to "Brother T." last year for over an hour. He was in the process of digitizing his collection of airchecks and sent me a copy of the KKDJ sounder. I'm in shock. My next blog will be about my memories of T. Michael Jordan.

    Thank you, Alan, for starting this blog – and for all the many years of work at LARadio.com. We never met. I wrote the daily Rewind column for 13 years. My favorite T. Michael Jordan story: While working afternoons at WGNE in Panama City in studios that were just two blocks from the Atlantic Ocean, a hurricane hit and Jordan told his listeners that the waves were ideal for surfing.  Florida Highway Patrolmen showed up at the station and ordered Jordan to tell his listeners conditions are dangerous and they should stay away from the beach.

So what happened at KFI?

  My mailbox has been full over the past few days. I first became aware of the controversy involving evening host Tim Conway Jr. and executive producer Sheron Bellio  via a May 14 article in AsAmNews , a publication that offers both original stories and aggregates news about the Asian American community (read it here ). Louis Chan, their national correspondent, wrote about a skit done during Conway’s May 3 program. Among the highlights from the story:   ·        When (listener) Keith Kawamoto heard a bit by Tim Conway Jr on KFI-AM 640 imitating a Japanese American woman, Kawamoto “couldn’t believe” they were doing that. The sketch on May 3 involved the long time Los Angeles radio host supposedly interviewing the wife of (KLAC-AM 570 LA Sports) sportscaster  Vic “the Brick” Jacobs , Yuko Sakamoto.   ·       “The imitation was so stereotypical with the character saying “Moshi-moshi” & “Ah-so” type comments in a sing-song voice interspersed with karate screams with gongs gonging

Bulletin: Layoffs at KNX

We're hearing from "sources on the street" some veterans of Audacy's all-news outlet have been let go. Frank Mottek , business correspondent and Randy Kerdoon , morning sports anchor have exited KNX, along with Rich Hudson, a production coordinator. Mottek arrived at KNX from South Florida via WMJX ("96X") -- where he started when he was 16 years of age -- and then all-news WINZ. He was heard nationally along with CBS News correspondent Christopher Glenn  when they covered the Challenger explosion in 1986. For the past 29 years at KNX, Mottek has served as field reporter and news anchor, but is perhaps best known for his work reporting from the financial desk. He hosted a weekly program entitled "Mottek on Money" and previously anchored the daily "KNX Business Hour." Mottek was also seen on both TV on KTLA and KCBS-TV.
